Ladislau Csendes

In his four decades of concert activity, Ladislau Csendes cultivated a varied and extensive repertoire, collaborating with prestigious orchestras and major record labels (such as Mode Records New York), performing artistic tours, recording an impressive discography, and making numerous radio and TV recordings on four continents. His appearances as a violinist and violist, as well as his dedication to promoting the viola d’amore, were praised by music critics (see Frankfurter Allgemeine).

At the same time, he creatively enriched the contemporary Romanian concert and chamber repertoire, being invited to important international festivals in Great Britain, Austria, Poland, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. Devoted and knowledgeable interpreter of contemporary music, founding member of the acclaimed Aperto Ensemble (1990), and collaborator with well-known Bucharest new music groups (Arheus, Pro Contemporania, Profil, etc.), Ladislau Csendes has performed numerous Romanian premieres (Irinel Anghel, George Balint, Dan Dediu, Călin Ioachimescu, Adrian Iorgulescu, Octav Nemescu, Tiberiu Olah, Doina Rotaru, Aurel Stroe, Anatol Vieru, Mihaela Vosganian).

Ladislau Csendes has been a member of the jury for prestigious interpretation competitions. In 2000, he was elected president of the international Valentino Bucchi jury in Rome (Italy). He obtained a Ph.D. in musicology and a thesis within the MIDAS-UNMB post-doctoral school on the Baltic-Scandinavian violin repertoire. In 2011, Radio House Publishing released his volume entitled “George Enescu, a Monitored Exile?”

For years, Ladislau Csendes taught chamber music. Among those who benefited from his guidance were members of the RTÉ Contempo Quartet (Ireland), violinists such as Remus Azoiței, Vlad Stănculeasa, Raluca Stratulat, Emanuela Lăcraru, violists such as Marian Movileanu, pianists such as Toma Popovici.

Ladislau Csendes is one of the most appreciated Romanian violinists.

Born in 1964, he graduated from the National University of Music Bucharest in 1991.

Between 1992 and 2006, he was invited to perform at international festivals such as Concerti per l’Europa, Venice (Italy, 1992), Tage für Neue Music, Darmstadt (Germany, 1996), Silesian Contemporary Music Festival, Katowice (Poland, 1998), World Music Days, Bucharest (Romania, 1999), Bach Non Stop, Bucharest (Romania, 2000), Appenzeller Winter, St. Gallen (Switzerland, 2000), Haydn, Bucharest (Romania, 2001), Warsaw Autumn, Warsaw (Poland, 2002), George Enescu, Bucharest (Romania, 2003), Wien Modern, Vienna (Austria, 2003), New Music Week, Bucharest (Romania, 1995-2006).

He has toured in over 24 countries, including Switzerland, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Singapore.

He is a member of various international juries, such as the Mihail Jora in Bucharest (2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999), Cornelia Bronzetti in Campina (2006, 2004, 2002, 2000, 1998), Remember G. Enescu in Sinaia (2007, 2006, 2005), Mozart in Cluj (president – 1999), Aperto in Bucharest (president – 2000), and Valentino Bucchi in Rome (president – 2000).

His repertoire includes works from Bach, Bartók, Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Enescu, Fauré, Franck, Haydn, Hindemith, Kurtág, Ligeti, Mozart, Paganini, Ravel, Schubert, Schumann, Schnittke, Stravinsky, Vivaldi, and Yuasa.

He is currently a university lecturer at the National University of Music Bucharest (since 2004), a solo instrumentalist with the National Radio Orchestra (since 1994), and a member of the Romanian Mozart Society (since 2000).

He has taught courses on early music (viola d’amore) in Borsec (in 2000) and Piatra Neamț (in 1999).

He has been teaching courses at the ICon Arts Academy since its inception in 2003.
