Mircea Ardeleanu

Mircea Ardeleanu is a world renowned Romanian percussionist.

Born in Cluj, he studied percussion in his home town and in Basel. After passing his two exams as a soloist, he became a free lancer and fully dedicated his career to contemporary music.

In 1978 he received first prize in the National Competition in Bucharest, solo section, and one year later he was awarded first prize in the International Competition Gaudeamus, in Rotterdam. His collaboration with contemporary composers from all over the world resulted in many new pieces, many of them dedicated to him.

Mircea Ardeleanu is constantly invited to give classes and workshops in various locations in Europe, Asia, North and South America and between 1996 and 2006 he organized the percussion master class within the Darmstadt International Summer Course. His vast teaching career was awarded many international prizes.

Apart from radio and television recordings worldwide, he also recorded disks with works by K. Stockhausen, I. Xenakis and H. W. Henze – „El Cimarron“ and more recently he released a record of works written for him by various Swiss or Swiss resident composers. The record “…pas a pas nulle part…” – G. Kurtag received the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik award for best contemporary music record, in 2003.

Mircea Ardeleanu holds concerts in the most important contemporary music festivals both as a soloist and within orchestras or chamber music ensembles. As a professor in the Lugano Conservatory he started and led the percussion department up until 2006/. From this year on, Mircea Ardeleanu has been a Gast Professor in many conservatories in the world: Milan, Beijing, Saint Petersburg, Luzern and Sao Paolo. He currently resides in Switzerland.

Mircea Ardeleanu is a mentor within the ICon Arts Academy since 2007.
