About the programme

The Composition Program is a condensed creative lab set in the splendid city of Sibiu where young musicians can refine their new works for a specified instrumental formula. During one intensive week they will work closely with the ICon Arts Ensemble – official contemporary music ensemble of Sibiu State Philharmonic and the British composition mentor Philip Cashian (Head of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music), who will help them find the best way to express their musical ideas. The final version of the works will be premiered in the opening event of the ICon Arts Transilvania Festival, on the 24th of July at Sibiu Philharmonic.


The process

Maximum four composers will be selected.

Based on the points given by the selection committee, the selected composers will receive half-scholarships, covering 50% of the total 600 Euro costs with one participants’ accommodation, meals, local transportation to ICon Arts concert sites, mentorship and performance. The remaining 300 Euro will be paid by the composers.

Instrumental formula in 2021 for the ICon Arts Ensemble: violin, viola, flute, bassoon or trombone (at the composer’s choice) and percussion.

Registration procedure

The call for applications is open to all composers under 40 years old. The application forms may only be submitted online, until May 31st 2021, at the following e-mail address:
There is no entry fee for the registration during first phase.


The selected composers will be announced via email and on the ICon Arts website, starting from the 10th of June, 2021.

After receiving the results, the selected composers for the half-scholarship will pay the remaining participation fee of 300 Euro into the organizer’s account, no later than 10 days after the announcement (the fee covers accommodation, meals, composition workshop and performance-related costs for the period 19th of July/arrival day – 25th of July/departure day). Airport transfer will be provided by the organizers.
In case of one’s payment delay, the place will be reassigned to a composer-in waiting. The scores of new works for the ICon Arts Ensemble (Quintet) will be delivered no later than the 10th of July, 2021.

The participants in the ICon Arts Composition Program will authorize the organizer (UCIMR) to use the respective works free of charge for future recordings, performances or any other purpose, without any restrictions. They also agree to mark the score with the following: “Piece written for the ICon Arts Academy Composition Program – Transilvania, Romania, 2021”.
